FEBRUARY - BLACK HISTORY MONTH
In 1976 as part of the United States Bicentennial, the informal expansion of Negro History Week to Black History Month was officially recognized by the United States government. President Gerald Ford spoke in regards to this, urging Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."

South Bend Cubs Reading Club
The South Bend Cubs Reading Club has come to West Side! Beginning February 1st through March 4th, students in grades 1-4 will have an opportunity to participate in a contest earning prizes as they 'round the bases' by simply reading! As students read specific genres and pass the AR tests, they will receive a prize. A FREE ticket to a SB Cubs game on Friday, April 22nd will be given to each student who makes it all the way around the bases! Parents - PLEASE encourage your child to read!
